1kbw Criminal Law Barristers

1kbw are criminal law barristers based in London, with a number of QCs and junior counsels. Criminal law is among our specialisms. At the well-known trial of Dr Bodkin Adams, the Eastbourne doctor who was acquitted of murdering his patients, it was 1kbw who provided the defence silk, Geoffrey Lawrence QC, who would later become the Honourable Mr Justice Lawrence.

Our connection with Sussex has been maintained and augmented by our premises in the High Street in Lewes. We have gone on to cement a useful working relationship with solicitors throughout the South-East since those early days, both prosecuting and defending all types of criminal cases at all levels. A large number of our leading barristers have undertaken criminal cases of a high profile in the Crown Court at Lewes and elsewhere. The more junior members regularly appear in the Crown and Magistrates' courts throughout the home counties.

We have extended our criminal law work into the Divisional Court, dealing with appeals by way of case stated and judicial review. It is our expectation that developments in Human Rights litigation will increase the amount of work in this area. Three members of our criminal law team are contributing editors to Archbold's "Criminal Pleading, Evidence and Practice".

A number of barristers from our London chambers, from the criminal law team, have provided lectures on the impact of the Human Rights Act 1988 and we are always pleased to give talks to our client firms on this and other important developments. The Practice Manager will supply further details.

Our London chamber has specialist barristers in serious criminal fraud cases working variously for the defence and the prosecution. Our QCs have been involved in many lengthy high profile cases throughout the country.

Due to the expertise of our top criminal barristers in child care work we have experience of a high amount of criminal cases which involve serious and sometimes fatal injuries to children. We are able to provide skilled law advocates with the specialist ability to cover these cases where family, civil and criminal aspects of child work frequently overlap. In that regard we are probably unique in our ability to approach criminal law.

Our members have frequently appeared before the General Medical Council instructed by the Medical Protection Society and the Medical Defence Union in the defence of doctors who have been accused of serious disciplinary transgressions, as well as appearances before other professional disciplinary tribunals.

As well as providing expertise to our private client base, our lawyers often accept instructions from the Treasury Solicitor, the Serious Fraud Office, H.M.Customs & Excise, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Environmental Agency.
