General Information:

1 King's Bench Walk is one of the most highly-regarded sets of chambers specialising in Family work of all kinds, and has the added advantage that it has a strong Criminal team too.  We offer two 12-month funded pupillages each year. The first six months (non-practising) are divided between two pupil-supervisors, and the second six months (practising period) is spent with a third. Chambers has over a dozen pupil supervisors of between 10 and 25 years' call, and aims to ensure that pupillage is as varied, useful and rewarding as possible.

At 1 King’s Bench Walk, a pupil will see a broad range of family work, including divorce, ancillary financial relief and both private and public children proceedings, as well as criminal work at both Magistrates Court and Crown Court level.  He or she will attend Court both with his or her pupil supervisor and with other junior members of Chambers.

1 King’s Bench Walk Chambers works principally in London and surrounding counties, but our members also practise throughout England and Wales, so pupillage will commonly involve an amount of travel on circuit.  In particular, we have a long association with Sussex and pupils will be able to spend some time at our Lewes premises.

It is Chambers' general policy to recruit new tenants from current pupils. Indeed over the past eight years we have have taken on as junior tenants all those who have completed their twelve months with us.

Finance:

This year there is available a fund of £50,000. All travel expenses incurred whilst accompanying a pupil-supervisor are reimbursed, and Chambers will fund any training which we may require a pupil to undertake.  In addition, a pupil will retain any income he or she earns in his or her second six months of pupillage.

Applications:

We invite applications for pupillage on our own application form, which can be downloaded below.  We do not subscribe to the Pupillage Portal (Formerly OLPAS), but adhere to their Summer Timetable as approved by the Bar Council.

  • Applications for 2011 have now closed
  • Interviews will be held during the month of July
  • Offers of pupillage will be made on 2 August 2010
Interviews:
The Selection Committee screens applications for evidence of:
  • Firm commitment to a career at the Bar;
  • Good academic/employment record (at least a 2:1 degree);
  • Particular interest in the areas of law in which 1 King's Bench Walk specialises.
A limited number of applicants will be invited for interview.  Pupillage interviews consist of one round only, conducted by a panel representing a cross section of our practice areas and experience. The interview format will be identical for each candidate. Objectively verifiable selection criteria are applied uniformly to each application. The Pupillage Portal (OLPAS) timetable for making offers of pupillage is also followed.
