LEGAL AID ‘OSCARS’ SEEK LEGAL AID CHAMPION
NOMINATION PERIOD ENDS 1 APRIL 2014.
The 2014 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards – the only awards celebrating the work of access to justice lawyers – are officially launched today (25 February 2014).
This year sees the introduction of new award categories for: Family Mediation, Housing, Inquests/Actions Against State – and Legal Aid Champion. See full list of 12 awards, below.
Carol Storer, director of LAPG, says: ‘After a turbulent and difficult year for practitioners, the Legal Aid Champion award is aimed at recognising campaigners and others who have fought so hard to protect the scheme and the clients it serves.’
LAPG has organised the LALY awards every year since 2003 on a not-for-profit basis.
The judging panel will be chaired by Lord Justice Andrew McFarlane, who sits in the court of appeal and has been a long-term supporter of the awards. He will be joined this year by the former DPP Keir Starmer QC, and journalist and Independent columnist Owen Jones, along with other leading legal figures.
Carol Storer says: Every year, the LALY judges are moved and impressed by the calibre of nominations we receive, which really do reflect the exceptional work being done by lawyers at the legal aid coalface.’
The deadline for nominations is 1 April and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in central London on 5 June 2014. For more information and tickets: www.lapg.co.uk
