1KBW is pleased to welcome back Sir Andrew McFarlane, a former tenant of Chambers and one of the most distinguished family law practitioners of his generation, after his recent retirement as President of the Family Division.

As an Associate Member at 1KBW, Sir Andrew will be accepting appointments as an early neutral evaluator in children law cases. He is widely recognised for his exceptional expertise in this area, following a long career which included co-writing Children Law and Practice, published to coincide with the enactment of the Children Act 1989.

Sir Andrew was called to the Bar in 1977 and joined 1KBW in 1993, taking Silk in 1998. His judicial career has included appointments as a Recorder in 1995, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2000, and a High Court Judge of the Family Division in 2005, before his elevation to the Court of Appeal in 2011 and then to President of the Family Division in 2018.

Chambers is proud to have Sir Andrew back in its ranks once more, and looks forward to benefiting from his unparalleled experience, insight and leadership in the field of family law.

Joint Head of Chambers, James Roberts KC, says “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Andrew back to 1KBW. His return to Chambers is a real privilege. Few figures have contributed so significantly to the development of family law, particularly children law, and his experience, judgment and wisdom will be of enormous value.”

Sir Andrew McFarlane says “I couldn’t be more pleased to be returning to 1KBW, a set with which I have a long and very happy association. I greatly look forward to contributing to Chambers as an Associate Member”.
